The Pico Ruivo
Pico Ruivo is the highest point of the Madeira Island archipelago with an altitude of 1861 meters and it is the third highest mountain in Portugal, being overtaken by Serra da Estrela in continental Portugal and by Ponta do Pico in the Azores archipelago. Arriving at the top of the mountain, we are faced with a unique landscape and it is the perfect place to capture the sunrise and sunset.
This Pico is located in the municipality of Santana and covers the parishes of Ilha and Faial. Access to Pico Ruivo is via Achada do Teixeira, via (PR. 1) Vereda do Areeiro, (PR. 1.1) Vereda da Ilha, (PR. 1.2) Vereda do Pico Ruivo and via (PR. 1.3) Vereda da Encumeada.
Along the way you will find small shelters, to rest and take refuge from the cold or the heat and even the fog and before going up to the top of the mountain you will find our shelter house that has been requalified and that supports tourists and hikers so they can take shelter from bad meteorological conditions. It is a safe place for those who want to rest and be able to enjoy a drink like tea, coffee, soft drinks, water or the typical Madeiran poncha, Madeira Wine and have a snack with our homemade cakes or the traditional honey cake.
